Why Los Blancos Have 'Utter Faith' in Teenager Pitarch

Thiago Pitarch in action
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for Real Madrid, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

When an teenage creates club history in a key European tie against City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a three-nil last-16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English champions in Tuesday's return to secure a quarter-final place.

At 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent From The Academy

The midfielder is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.

He signed for Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.

Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and determination he brought to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'

In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the senior squad and gave him minutes during the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that led to the clash with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I started playing the game, each day you go to train and every day you have a game," stated Pitarch after his debut.

"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."

Given a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.

The teenager has taken it with performances that have belied his age and inexperience.

"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," said the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.

"His standout trait is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I understand fans might be surprised to watch him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to do what he usually does.

"Thiago will continue to get chances with the first team. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before joining the club's renowned youth academy.

He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the option to play for both nations at the highest level.

Under international regulations, footballers may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.

He has featured for Spain at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are watching his progress with interest.

In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. Things are great with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Diaz opted to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.

He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at City, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by another academy player in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to help the team pursue trophies to come.

Following his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I have to earn my minutes on the pitch," he said after the win at Manchester.
