Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
