Two Separate Cuba-Headed Humanitarian Sailboats Declared Unaccounted For subsequent to Leaving the Coast of Mexico.
A comprehensive rescue and recovery mission is presently in progress in the Caribbean region for a duo of lost sailboats transporting humanitarian supplies journeying from Mexico to Havana.
Maritime Search Efforts Deployed
Mexico has dispatched naval teams and military search aircraft to search for the two vessels, which were carrying at least nine total sailors, according to a official statement.
The vessels had been projected to arrive in the Cuban capital on the early part of the week, but there has been radio silence from them and no confirmation of their docking, the statement clarified.
The Situation of Humanitarian Support to the Nation
Cuba has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the island grapples with multiple power outages across the country.
"The crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are fitted with appropriate safety systems and communication devices," a representative involved in the effort commented.
The nine individuals on board are nationals of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Officials said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their embassy officials.
"We are co-operating fully with the officials and remain confident in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.
Earlier Aid Delivery
Just days before, the Cuban government widely celebrated and officially received a different ship that had delivered a significant amount of donated goods to the country.
That ship, called "a new Granma" after the yacht in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, carried solar panels, medicines, infant formula, bicycles and food.
Wider Geopolitical Climate
Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of initiatives to ship critical assistance to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a energy blockade on the island nation was initiated.
Global bodies have since warned of ""severe" supply shortages, with over 50k operations postponed in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.
Foreign policy tensions have intensified lately, with remarks from various officials highlighting the complex situation regarding bilateral relations.
Responding to recent proposals, a high-ranking government figure stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is not up for negotiation."
Reports suggest that early stages of discussions were initiated, although their present status remains unclear.
The maritime authorities said it was pledged to using all of the resources at its reach to discover the sailboats and guarantee the security of the crews.
At this time, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban government.
