Top Selection

This Satirical Thriller

The filmmaker's unflinching commentary addresses the tyranny of feminine aesthetics as well as the perceived horrors of growing older. Demi Moore presents a masterful performance in the role of Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress forced into hosting a workout series on TV. Edged out thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, she turns to a mysterious and gruesome process titled the Substance. This produces a youthful duplicate named Sue, culminating in an increasingly parasitic dynamic among both women. October 17th, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This suspenseful thriller includes the talented actress in the role of Laura, a top-notch writer who opts for some time off from covering global conflict to board a high-end voyage alongside a terminally ill wealthy inheritor and philanthropist, her spouse, as well as other affluent guests. However when a mysterious woman goes overboard one night and the entire crew claims she was never there, her journalistic curiosity kick in. Streaming currently, on Netflix

Presence

The acclaimed director challenges his directorial skills in this nifty supernatural story captured wholly through the eyes of the spirit. After a clan including mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe moves into their recent residence, the lens – AKA the Presence – tracks their movements. The teen shows signs of conscious of the supernatural presence, and it looks like protective of her. However, the motive remains? It's a fun idea that remains concise, featuring a surprise that could catch you off guard. This Saturday, multiple showings, Sky Cinema

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Cage embraces his eccentric image through this autobiographical spoof. He acts as a narcissistic film star playing himself who takes on a $1m payday to attend a celebration on the Spanish island for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Recruited by the intelligence agency to gather intel on the alleged criminal, the actor's unique performing skills is put to the test. This Saturday, prime time, the Channel 4 network

The Black Phone

The director's claustrophobic thriller holds up well without requiring a continuation. Set in 1970s Colorado, multiple child abductions has left the children on edge. Once Finney is taken by the villain and locked up in a basement, he fears a fatal end. But the disconnected phone mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with spooky callers offering help, as the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the struggle between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for greed in Showalter's delightfully tacky biopic about the fallen TV preacher and her felon spouse. The actor portrays the greedy Jim, who proclaims early on, asserting religious justification for riches. The couple set about capitalizing on the nation's religious faith. It's a riot of tacky decor, bad makeup and insincerity, though Jessica Chastain succeeds to show Tammy Faye in a likable light. Tuesday 14 October, late night, Film4

Black Bag

This period's another release by the same director is a spy mystery as sharp as the polo necks sported by the actor's British agent. He is tasked to discover a mole among the team from a group of five – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Both actors excel of calm composure, resulting in an engaging mind game of deception or honesty unfolds. Additional actors join in the smart espionage amusement. This Friday, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema
