The former Liverpool manager says a return to lead Liverpool is theoretically possible.
Jurgen Klopp, who stepped down from Anfield in 2024, indicated that a future comeback remains a possibility. The 58-year-old, post a game-changing near-decade reign featuring continental glory and ending the club's long wait since 1990, has since taken on positions overseeing worldwide football for Red Bull and as an advisor with the German Football League.
Supporters’ Hopes and His Frank Comments
The club claimed the league title in the previous campaign, though countless followers who revere Klopp would embrace the idea that he might come back one day. During an extensive chat, he explained to Steven Bartlett: “I declared I will never coach a different club in England. So that means if then it’s Liverpool...yes. Theoretically it’s possible.”
“At 58 years old, which suggests the choice could be mine later on, who knows. Is a decision required immediately? In that case, I'd stay away. Luckily, it's not necessary. I'll simply watch what the future brings.”
Conditions for a Comeback
Pressed on the specific conditions would have to unfold to draw him back to the dugout, he revealed he feels no immediate pull to such a return. “I don’t even know exactly, I love what I do right now,” he stated. “I don’t miss coaching; I don’t miss standing under bad weather for two-and-a-half or three hours; No need for interviews four times, three times a week or having 10-12 interviews a week.
“I don’t miss the dressing room in that context, however, dining out alongside the squad having a nice chat, is pleasant. With many victories thus frequently positive atmosphere at the club. I still have Van Dijk's laughter in my ear for example.”
Praise for His Successor
Klopp was full of praise of the current boss, acknowledging his role for the adjustments which secured the championship in the previous season. They've been defeated a string of losses in every contest post heavy investment, though he denied the suggestion of it representing a decline.
“[Liverpool have] an incredible striker in Flo[rian] Wirtz, doubters will be silenced if spoken against. An outstanding player. Ekitike, incredible player. It’s a really good balanced team. Fans shouldn't fret over the club, they will be fine.”
Heartfelt Words for Diogo Jota
Klopp also spoke emotionally about the death of Diogo Jota, whom he brought in while in charge, along with the consequences for the team. The forward died tragically in a car crash alongside his brother in July.
“How do you replace a person like him? This isn't just regarding his footballing ability, it's his character. It's hard to picture the team environment missing him. Putting it into words is tough on this topic. It was an incredible shock for all the boys also. Not a single person will ever use it as an excuse though it's a fact. You walk in a dressing room where he was omnipresent. Coping with it emotionally is challenging. Unbearable.”
