The former England manager Discloses Priorities on Mentoring Young People Rather than Football Management
Sir Gareth Southgate has made clear that he is not pursuing a return to football management, explaining that it would be tough to duplicate the higher calling he experienced as England’s manager.
He expressed his intention to channel his attention toward engaging young people and addressing what he labeled a pervasive negative narrative currently found in the country.
Exploring Different Paths Away from Football
In a recent radio interview, the manager was prompted regarding speculation linking him with available jobs in the top flight and abroad.
“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he replied. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”
Dedication to Positive Examples
Ahead of the release of his new title, his leadership-focused book, he shared that he is “very passionate” about setting examples for young people, utilizing experiences from his tenure as leader of the England team between 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.
Southgate believes that his experience managing the squad, during which the team transformed from being strongly criticized to broadly loved, holds general lessons.
“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he said. “The public viewed the players as egotistical, yet we successfully reversed that image. The squad’s ability to connect diverse communities was truly powerful.”
Parenting and Shaping the Next Generation
Reflecting on his role as a parent, the coach commented: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”
He went on: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”
Togetherness Beyond Discord
The former manager asserted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the societal attention often centers on division.
“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he stated. “Many areas face economic hardship, which naturally inspires demands for improvement. However, I’ve experienced the power of national unity. In the Covid crisis, acts of community support showed the country at its finest, proving our resilience when challenged.”
His forthcoming book, Dear England, is set to provide deeper reflections on guidance and public spirit based on his remarkable time in football.
