Chelsea's ambitions of securing a place automatically for the European Cup knockouts were dealt a blow as their Italian opponents came from behind to triumph in Bergamo.

Both sides went into this game with matching points tallies in the initial stage of this year's competition, having secured three victories, drawn, and suffered one defeat to have accrued 10 points.

For much of the game there was not much to choose between them in this contest too, although Chelsea took the lead in the first half when the Brazilian turned in the captain's delivery.

But Atalanta remained a threat going forwards, with ex- Premier League attacker Ademola Lookman problems for the defence.

James fired wide in the second half but Atalanta upped the pressure and deservedly levelled when ex-West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca a centering pass.

The winger hammered a powerful shot straight at the goalkeeper but they got the decisive strike late on when the Chelsea defence retreated from the midfielder, who seized the opportunity with a driven strike.

Chelsea attempted to rescue a draw in stoppage time but a superb stop by Marco Carnesecchi kept out Pedro.

The result means Chelsea slip out of the automatic qualification places—the spots that progress automatically for the next round—to 11th with two league phase matches left to play.

Atalanta, meanwhile, leap up to third, three points clear of the Blues.

Blues Breakdown - Concerning Run Continues

This was a hugely frustrating outcome for Chelsea as even a draw was keeping them well placed to secure the top eight position they require to avoid the lottery of the qualifying play-off round.

But they let their concentration slip in defence with seven minutes left on the clock and their opponents seized the moment.

The Italian side are in fine fettle at the moment so this was always going to be a tough test for the Blues, but they will be disappointed to be departing with no points after securing the early advantage.

But the broader context is that this extends Chelsea's worrying sequence of results in all competitions.

Since defeating the Spanish giants 3-0 at the end of November they are now without a win in their last four outings.

Too Many Rotations Turning Out to Be Costly?

Manager Enzo Maresca made five alterations for this match as he continued his run of moving players in and out of the starting 11.

The rotations here came after he implemented the same number for the loss to Leeds and six for the draw with AFC Bournemouth prior to the trip to Atalanta.

The coach will see rotation as necessary as he tries to handle players' minutes and compete both at domestically and in Europe, but he stated the key nucleus of players remains the same for important games.

"I think tonight [in] the first XI we had eight or nine players who played against Tottenham, FC Barcelona, and the Gunners," he stated.

"If you see the five changes that we made relative to Bournemouth it may be a change but it involves the eight or nine players who played Barcelona.

"The players who played this evening are the individuals playing almost all the matches."
