Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm triggered widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making tropical storms stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms cause approximately millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
