Prison Surprise: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Life in Prison

He contested the law and justice prevailed.

A couple of months following being handed a quarter-century plus sentence for seeking to “annihilate” Brazil’s political system, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro now looks jail-bound.

Anticipated Incarceration

The found-guilty coup-monger – who's been under house arrest in his residence while a number of court processes and appeals unfold – is largely predicted to be jailed in the near future, amidst growing rumors that he will be moved to a notorious maximum security facility.

Previous Comments on Prisoners

Over Bolsonaro’s four-decade time in politics, the far-right former soldier displayed scant compassion for Brazil’s prison population.

“What’s the need to provide those dirtbags a good life?” he once pondered. “They ought to simply be screwed, full-fucking-stop. That’s what I reckon.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro declared: “Unless you desire to wind up in prison, the only thing required is to avoid rape, abduction or theft.”

Jail Destination Speculation

Yet the possibility of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has shocked allies, four of whom this week toured the complex in an apparent bid to discourage the high court from sending him there.

Senator Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s political party who was among that group, said he predicted the septuagenarian leader to be imprisoned in the coming fortnight and was concerned his destination could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s severe gut problems – the consequence of a life-threatening assault during the 2018 presidential political campaign – signified it would be hazardous to keep the former president there. “His [health] situation is very grave. He cannot to cope if they move him to Papuda … It will be terrible,” he added, who also worried about cramped cells and the standard of prison meals.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas noted observing cells accommodating forty detainees: “That is almost one square meter per prisoner.

“We talked to the inmates and they complain, naturally, of the terrible meals,” continued the senator.

Backers Voice Concerns

The senator isn't the only voice speaking out ahead of the one-time head of state's predicted detention.

Authoring in a prominent publication, another ally, the former cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “brutal” end to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” political career and claimed Brazil was about to experience “the biggest unfairness in its history”.

“It represents an unfairness that erodes the souls of countless Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Divided Public Reaction

It is possibly true due to the significant support Bolsonaro retains on the Brazilian right. Yet his anticipated jailing has also warmed the hearts of many other people who think he deserves to be imprisoned for conspiring to prevent his successor from taking power – and also conspiring to have him assassinated.

Congressman Otoni, a politician for the incumbent administration's allied group, stated: “No one desires Bolsonaro to be put in a dungeon. Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be sent in isolation. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We wish him to receive respectful handling – but proper handling while incarcerated. He can’t persist being his personal jailer for his lifetime.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro backers, who have for a long time applauding the harsh treatment of inmates, had abruptly woken up to their privileges. “Recently has the far-right – which has consistently claimed that human rights are not for offenders – chosen to visit a penitentiary to learn what situations are truly like,” he stated.

“Bolsonaro is a offender,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he merited “shameful, degrading conduct”.

Likely Incarceration Environment

In spite of rumors that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which currently holds about fourteen thousand detainees, his expected location seems to be a adjacent jail for police officers and other “unique” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

His potential cell are far more comfortable than those in the larger jail, although nonetheless a far cry from the luxury Bolsonaro had while occupying the stunning presidential palace, around 12 miles away.

As per reports, the cell Bolsonaro could anticipate inhabit in Papudinha is about 24 square meters – approximately the area of a couple of car spots – and includes a 12 square meter restroom with a shower and a 130 square foot balcony. “Bolsonaro would be authorized to have a set and even a cooler in his room as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” information indicated.

Political Comments

He criticized the talked-about idea to send the ex-president to Papuda as “an act of payback” on the part of the presiding magistrate who presided over Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will determine his fate in the {
