Citizens have come together throughout the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted assault on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in Gaza.

The assault led to over 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken away to Gaza as captives. It was the single most fatal day for Jewish people since the World War II.

Israel responded by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are considered reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"Our violent enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will no longer present a danger to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled official remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but events still occurred around the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the families of people who died in the Hamas assault was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the affected families, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.

A period earlier, a moment of silence was observed throughout the country.

Ceasefire Talks in Egypt

Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to examine the terms of the plan.

A senior delegate knowledgeable about the talks said that an late session of negotiations commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official said the earlier meeting ended without significant progress, because of differences over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not restart combat after the first phase of the deal.

He noted that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to deliver any significant progress," but mentioned that intermediaries are striving to close the differences between the conflicting groups.

Critical Matters in Discussions

  • A lasting truce
  • The swap of the captives still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies deliveries
  • Future management of the territory

Civilian Reaction

In Tel Aviv's public square that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member endured the attack on the gathering, where hundreds were killed and dozens more were captured by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No location appears as home now and until all the hostages come back no one will have peace of mind."

"Once we see everybody home returned, we can breathe anew. Then we can commence recover," she continued.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to demonstrate their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel states nearly fifty continue in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be alive.

Activist one woman stated: "It's necessary do every compromise needed for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."

Surveys now regularly indicate that about the majority of Israeli citizens want the conflict to conclude in return for the release of the captives.

Palestinian Situation

At the area of the music event, grieving people assembled to honor the dead.

From that location, the boom of aerial bombardments and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people said the severe Israeli bombardment continued.

In the urban center, bombardments were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side district, Rimal and locality areas and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"As the dusk arrives, the fear appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, explained.

"Me and my three children are terrified of the bombings. All the night we are resting together, clinging, notably my youngest child who puts his face on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we look at the reports to see developments. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be achieved and that the conflict will resume to us."

Medical Emergency

The medical facility in Gaza City said it had received the bodies of several people by the daytime, including three killed in an Israeli strike in the south part area.

A different healthcare center in the south region of that area indicated two more dead people had been brought there. A person was killed by Israeli troops while attempting to get help to the south region, medical staff said.
