Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials expressed anger after Donald Trump charged a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and declared they should be detained and punished "by death" following their posting of a disputed video.
The Message That Sparked the Debate
The clip, shared on Tuesday, features six Democratic lawmakers who formerly served in military or defense roles.
"Like us, you all made an oath to defend and defend this founding document," the officials stated in the short video. "Currently, the threats to our constitution aren't just from overseas, but from right here at home. Our statutes are explicit, you can decline illegal orders, you can decline improper directives, you must decline unlawful commands. No one has to carry out directives that contravene the statutes or our constitution."
Trump's Furious Reaction
The recorded statement seemed to trigger a angry reaction from the former president.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate message, he wrote: "This represents really bad, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their comments cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent post, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives Answer
Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, House Democratic leader published a unified declaration censuring the comments.
"Political violence has no role in America," they stated. "Representatives who were featured in the video all served our nation with great patriotism and distinction. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's offensive and harmful death threats against members of Congress, and urge Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in communication with protective services "to make certain the safety of these members and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay remove these unhinged digital publications and withdraw his dangerous language before he leads to violence," the declaration added.
Lawmakers' Firm Answer
The representatives who were featured in the video also issued a statement.
"We identify as former service members and defense specialists who love this United States and swore an vow to safeguard and support the national charter of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge is permanent, and we aim to honor it. No warning, coercion, or call for violence will deter us from that sacred responsibility."
"The significant point is that the former president deems it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to restate the statutes," they continued. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their backs as they carry out their pledge to the national charter and obligation to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."
They stated: "Every American must come together and condemn the ex-president's requests for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a time for ethical certainty."
Additional Governmental Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's comments and published on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is calling for the execution of elected officials."
He stated: "This is an clear THREAT. All senators, all representatives, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this right away and without qualification."
The Republican House speaker defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "treason", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "It is very dangerous, you have prominent officials of the legislature instructing troops to defy commands, I think that is historic in the nation's past."
The GOP official also according to sources stated to media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the offense of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to parse the wording and establish all that."
White House Statement
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when inquired by a journalist, "Is the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the executive branch representative answered: "No."
"It's important to note about what the president is responding to," the spokesperson said. "There are active officials of the American legislature who conspired to orchestrate a recorded statement to members of the national defense, to serving soldiers encouraging them to defy the executive's lawful orders."
She said: "The sanctity of our defense system depends on the command structure, and if that structure is compromised, it can result in fatalities, it can lead to disorder, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are fundamentally supporting."
