California is Fully Drought-Free for the First Instance in Two and a Half Decades.

Following 25 long years, not a single part of California is experiencing water scarcity. This milestone follows grueling years marked by insufficient rainfall that intensified fire dangers and challenged its huge agribusiness.

An Update Shows An Absence of Abnormally Dry Areas

Thursday's report from the federal monitoring program showed that the entire state is without drought or abnormal dryness. This change resulted from multiple above-normal rainfall that helped fill water storage sites like Shasta and Oroville far beyond their long-term norms.

“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve only known in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” remarked a weather expert.

Following Powerful Weather to Soggy Celebrations

The journey here included severe and lethal winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, causing significant overflow, electrical failures, and fatalities. Even though those events began to alleviate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.

As late as late December, regions like Modoc County were deemed abnormally dry. Subsequent downpours at the onset of 2026 eliminated those final dry conditions.

The Vital Sierra Snow Is Below Average

But, hydrologists note that being out of drought does not mean being out of the woods. Latest data of the high-elevation snow show it at roughly seven-tenths of the typical level.

This mountain snow, which accounts for approximately 30% of the state's water as it melts in the spring, is a critical factor for the year ahead. Water officials stress that it is not yet time to draw conclusions for the annual water supply.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” said a California water official. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to pick up by the start of April so that we’re nearer to normal.”

While the drought map indicates no dryness, attention turns to sustaining this precious water balance throughout the rest of the year.
